Financial Counselling Australia 2018 conference is being held at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Hobart, Tasmania

ATSI

PRE CONFERENCE FORUMS | MONDAY | MAY 14

This day has gone from strength to strength. It is a full day forum of all things of interest to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander workers and those working predominantly with indigenous clients. It was started by Jan Pentland to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander financial counsellors and money management workers in their roles.

Where

At Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel in Hobart (next door the conference venue and many people will stay here too. Book via Ozaccom .

Time

9.00 am to 5.30 pm, followed by dinner and… something fun.

The forum is organised by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander steering group. The steering group sets the agenda and runs this great day.

What is the cost?

Everything has a cost, and catered events are costly to put on. But fortunately for eligible (invited) delegates, DSS provides some money to sponsor this day, so there is no charge (but we pay the hotel per person registered, so let us know if you end up not coming, so we don’t waste money).

There’s $25 charge for a fun dinner, somewhere nearby. This includes drinks (and the dinner is subsidized by FCA). Remember to register for the Monday 'ATSI dinner' when your register for the ATSI forum.

Where do you stay?

This year the ATSI forum has 40 rooms set aside at the Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel in Hobart so that you are all together, but you need to book by 15 March or they will be released. The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel is next door to the conference venue and is really nice. The rooms have kitchenettes if you want to make your own breakfast. There is a Woolworths nearby, and a restaurant/bar downstairs. There are a few 2 bedroom apartments.

You can book your accommodation here. Tell Ozaccom that you're part of the “ATSI block.”

Who pays for you to travel to Hobart

ATSI Network members will need to book and pay for their own flights.  Sponsored delegates will be reimbursed after the FCA Conference (i.e. you have to actually attend to be reimbursed, which sounds fair as you're receiving precious sponsorship money).

Please be mindful of costs when choosing your flight, so the pot of money covers the group. Thanks for helping.

Who can come?

The forum is for:

  • All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander financial counsellors/capability workers
  • Non-indigenous financial counsellors and financial capability workers who work predominately with indigenous people and communities
  • Those who are members of the National ATSI Google Network.

We encourage all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander financial counsellors and capability workers to attend.

If you’re not eligible for sponsorship (as there is a limit of one sponsored spot per agency) we hope that your agency can still pay for you to attend the conference, and the ATSI forum is still free for you.

If you work in this space and want to be in the 'ATSI-remote google group’ please have a chat to Lynda Edwards and introduce yourself. Call Lynda at 0447 776 418 or email lynda.edwards@financialcounsellingaustralia.org.au .

Know anyone who should be there, but isn’t in the loop?

Please pass on this information and suggest they give Lynda a call on at 0447 776 418. We’ve had some very grateful people over the years join up, who up till then had no connection or support from an ATSI network.

Can non-indigenous FCs/FCWs come?

The forum is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander financial counsellors/financial capability workers or financial counsellors/financial capability workers who work predominately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

Generally if you’d like to know more about working with indigenous clients, but you don’t at this point work predominantly in this space, unfortunately it’s  not the forum for you. However, we will be running a concurrent workshop about working with diverse communities, one being Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

If you are uncertain about whether you are able to attend, contact Lynda.

Where is it being held?

The ATSI Forum is at Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel in Hobart. (Most of the ATSI forum delegates will stay there. It's next to the conference hotel).

Is there funding to attend?

There is no other FCA funding to attend the conference. We only get a limited amount of government funding for the ATSI forum.

Agencies receive funding for their workers to do professional development and keep up to date. Everyone else who comes to the conference has to pay .. . . and then we use that money to run the conference!
